How to Add Subtitles to Your Videos

How to Add Subtitles to Your Videos

As part of Deaf Awareness Week, we're going to show you how to add subtitles to your videos! This feature comes with many benefits and can increase your audience, including deaf / hard-of-hearing viewers and non-native English speakers.

You've probably seen some mistakes in subtitles, sometimes they're unintentionally funny or annoying. In this global society where filmmakers want their films to travel to many international film festivals and where companies like Netflix are bringing international productions to its subscribers all over the world, subtitling has gone from a luxury to a necessity. This new reality also has a great side effect for people with hearing loss: a greater accessibility of films!

However, what if you cannot hear that deadly gunshot? Or missing out on background sounds or music? In this workshop, Meike Lindsen, founder of Cinema Bioscoop, focuses on how to subtitle films for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. Don't miss out, join us to make your videos more inclusive.

Free entry but spaces are limited, save yours now! We will start at 3:30pm in the Orange Room and wrap up at around 5:30pm.

Important to know

You will need to bring your own laptop (make sure it's fully charged before you arrive!). We will use a cloud-based program, so no need to download or purchase anything.

You are encouraged to bring your own video that you'd like to subtitle. If you don't have one, not to worry, we can provide some videos for you.

Nearest station is London Bridge.

Open Mic: Screen your short film

Want to show a film you've made? Send it to us! We're doing our first open mic night for short films at The Montpelier in Peckham, a pub with a cosy cinema room. First come, first served, so make sure you register your ticket now for a slot. Each filmmaker will have the chance to do a little Q&A.

This is a smaller and more intimate event than our usual events (up to 30 people) which is a great way to really connect with fellow filmmakers and make some new friends!

If you'd like to show your film, please:
- Make sure it is under 20 minutes
- Make sure it has English captions for deaf and hard-of-hearing people

After you've booked a ticket, we will email you for a digital copy of your film so please book with your correct email address. If we find that the film does not meet our above requirements, we will not screen it (sorry, no refunds, we've warned you!). The film can be of any genre and can be something from 20 years ago, something recent or even something you're about to make before the event. One film per person only.

If you want to attend but don't want to show a film, you're more than welcome to! Just choose the second ticket option. If you need a BSL interpreter, please tick this option when booking a ticket. All tickets need to be booked in advance online. If you are screening a film, you must be able to attend so please make sure you're available on the evening of Thursday 29 March.

Doors will open at 7pm and films will start at 7:30pm. The event page will be regularly updated with details of the film programme.

One Minute Filmmaking Project

One Minute Filmmaking Project

Want to get experience on a short film production? Join us in making a short film from scratch, cast and crewed entirely by people looking to get experience on a shoot! One of the best ways to learn filmmaking is to go out and shoot - we're here to help make that happen.

The challenge is to create a one-minute short film with no budget in a month. Have a look at our last project.

Whether you're interested in directing, acting or editing, there'll be a role for you. All we ask is that you make yourself available on the dates below for pre-production meetings and the shoot itself.

Saturday 24 March: Meet & greet, brainstorm
Saturday 31 March: Get script ready, rehearse
Saturday 7 April: Get familiar with equipment
Saturday 14 April: Shooting day

All of our meetings will take place during the day. There may be other tasks to do outside of those meetings. After the shoot, the film will go straight into post-production and be completed by Tuesday 24 April. We will then screen the final film at one of our future events where you'll get the chance to do a Q&A.

The roles are first come, first served, so don't delay in booking the role you want! The project itself is free to join but there is a small booking fee of £10 to help cover the costs towards meeting rooms, food expenses, interpreters, etc. It also minimises the chance of last-minute dropouts. This is a great opportunity for those who are starting out or looking to get more active in filmmaking.

As always, we aim to make our screenings and workshops accessible to people with hearing loss - if you need a BSL interpreter, please let us know when booking or you can email us.

No one turned away for lack of funds

If for any reason, you are unable pay the fee but really want to join us, we won't turn you away! Just send us a private message to tell us what role you're interested in and we'll go from there (you'll have to be quick, if the role is already taken, we can't give you the spot).

How to get there

Nearest station is London Bridge.
